the plane essentials
what’s in my personal item for long flights and layovers
the best airport matcha in my favorite northern city - Copenhagen
Half of a smooth journey is the preparation, here’s my curated list after years of travel:
First, the bag I opt for is an oversized handbag - both glamorous and functional (and perfect for a day trip later in my itinerary 😙). Mine is vintage second hand but you can find the brand on eBay here! I also love the one from Calpak.
1. A sweater
even if you’re flying from San Diego to Palermo, cabin air can drop to incredibly low temps. So worth taking up space in your bag.
2. Thick, Compression socks
see above ^ , high altitude pressure can cause circulation issues and keeping your feet warm prevents illness .
3. A mini spa kit
I love pampering myself to get off feeling gorgeous, here’s what’s in my little bag:
face wash and moisturizer (yes I do skincare in the plane bathroom)
Lip sleeping mask - or some shea butter for a natural alternative !
Korean beauty face mask - I love this one from Biodance 🧖♀️
eye mask for snoozing - here’s one I’ve used from Quince
4. Headphones with a cord
I prefer over the ear ones that can plug into the TV in the seat (because truthfully sleeping on planes is difficult for me so I resort to watching dozens of films instead)
5. My journal
Duh! The best time to reflect is when you’re literally thousands of miles away from what could be bothering you.
I really like this manifestation journal from my fav motivational creator - Tam Kaur ✨
6. Downloaded playlists and podcasts
I’m a spotify aficionado, and my countless playlists prove it. I either listen to a guided mediation : this one makes me happpy, or a playlist that embodies the trip I’m about to embark on.
Check out my personal Spotify for what I’m listening to and some of my plane playlists! 🎧
7. Emergency snacks and a reusable water bottle
If you’re against plane food I’d recommend packing a sandwich and some yummy (somewhat healthy) treats like fruit or dark chocolate that make flying more bearable. Also pro tip: fill up your water bottle right before boarding!
8. The boring pocket
a safeguarded part of my bag with my passport, wallet, some cash, and printouts of my flight itinerary, scan of my passport and hotel booking (just in case!) I was taught this by a study abroad program director!
The bag in action :) and my fav plane outfit, a sleek but comfy lululemon set
