the expansiveness and beauty of solo-travel

Growing up, I would hear people say all the time “I want to go there, but I have no one to go with”. Their fear of being alone so obviously obstructed their dream to travel. Some of those fears are perfectly justified - especially as a woman on her own in many parts of the world (more on safety coming soon!)

But more often, we as humans are afraid to sit in our own presence for extended periods of time, or we believe an experience as beautiful as travel has to be shared to be meaningful. After all, our very best memories likely aren’t going to the grocery store alone or commuting to work. But, like most things in life, what if everything you needed is on the other side of that fear.

I took my first solo-journey at 20 - which was technically a solo-trip within a solo-trip. I was studying abroad my third year of my undergrad in a small italian village near rome (stay tuned for my recs there 🥰 ). I had just been to Venice one month prior, where I met a lovely man 10 years my senior who I was convinced was my soulmate. Oh young amber… I took a train to venice to see him again - or perhaps just run into him, as he only saw me as a friend, or little sister, it seemed. Though we didn’t reconnect, that trip was destined to happen. The amount of expansiveness and inner knowledge about myself was like nothing I had ever encountered.

To be able to navigate how to get to your destination alone in a country where the language has not yet felt familiar is a doughty task. But like I always say, everything else after in life truly feels like a piece of cake. Sitting with your thoughts and completely absorbing a new place and culture without interference from a lovely companion is the most potent way to travel. Sure, it gets lonely, but the space solo-travel creates for new connections is priceless.

This is your sign to skip the excuses and cut through the fear, because the world of solo-travel has been waiting for you all along. Trust me, I have lived many lives to share this beauty with you. And for my fearless women out there, we owe it to our ancestors who never got these opportunities. We are the new wave of travel.
