winter wanders: top travel tips for cold destinations

how to get the most out of your frosty vacay

As someone who grew up in a warm mediterranean climate, winter destinations have a sense of whimsy and wonder for me. I love the briskness in the air, the stark colors of snow and sky, and a reason to break out my gorgeous vintage coats. I used to live in Vienna, and had the chance to experience the high tourist season there which revolves around their christmas markets (so cute and a must see). However, it’s taken me several tries to get the handle on how to travel in the cold.

Trips like this require more than the throw-a-bikini-in-a-bag method I sometimes find myself doing when I travel to warmer waters. It requires advanced weather app checking, more fine-adjusting to your skincare regime, and selecting different activities for the itinerary.

Two january’s past - I found myself on a plane to London, where I would meet a lover before we continued on to Scandinavia. I was ill prepared for the type of cold I would face, and how much time I would be indoors.

Here are my top tips for when your travel plans include sub-zero temperatures:

Tip #1: pack for cozy nights in, think cashmere and your favorite sweat suit

winter weather is for rest, recover, and resetting. don’t overlook the most comfortable pieces when packing.

Tip #2: layer with a base of thermal (or silk), then knit sweaters for mid-layer, and finally a coat (or waterproof windbreaker)

a tried and tested formula for keeping warm - for any of you readers like me who never learned the art of dressing for the cold ;)

Tip #3: book accomodation in the city center, or close enough that you won’t mind braving the walk

this is not the season to get your “travel calves” in shape, opt for the more central hotels and stays, trust me - walking in a winter storm is not for the light hearted.

Tip #4: keep your airplane bag stocked

face and body moisturizer to save that glowy skin of yours, refillable water bottle (being hydrated is more important in higher altitudes than you think!), lip balm, an extra pair of socks and some warm gloves

Tip #5: fill the itinerary with pre-booked experiences

when you can’t simply wander and roam (my fav way to discover a place), its best to have a few museum tours, cooking classes, wine tastings, or theatre shows on your list to book (research opening times and days, as many places open seasonally;) ). See my favourite indoor London activity below :)

Afternoon tea at The Ivy - Chelsea Garden, a must do in London!

Thank you for reading my winter travel guide ❆ I wish you the merriest of times and I hope you feel equipped to fly north this winter xoxo - Amber
